Entrepreneurship Embodies A Jump Into The Unknown World

The World has a way of encouraging us that wealth arises from those that toil hard and get a well paying career in some financial institution on Wall Street. While I do not challenge that you can get really rich managing other people"s money as a fund manager or if you like to run an investment company like Warren Buffet, you can join in the fray. For the majority of us, we just like to do our own thing and enjoy the freedom that exists in creating our own ideal of a business.

Entrepreneurship therefore embodies a jump into the unknown world and one of the most essential means today of building wealth while still keeping your own freedom. This idea of entrepreneurship is not new and existed many years ago when the founding fathers were still roaming the new world and carried with them this overwhelming sense of adventure. Would you like to experience this kind of passion and excitement in your life today? This article will feature three ways to begin.

Firstly, decide if your current situation is for you. Some people really love their area of work but hate their job. If you fall into this, category then spend some time educating yourself all you can about your business and then begin brainstorming about possible alternatives related to your current industry. For example, many venture capitalist companies in the valley have among them experienced dot com CEOs that add their wealth of experience the deals that they do. Other stories include people who start selling their former company's items and later became large dealer wheelers who are big time traders.

Second, figure out how to get into the industry of your dreams. Taking for granted that you want to change career or profession, getting an MBA may be actually a good bet if you think you are the academic sort. Else, why not get a job in a related industry. For example, stories abound of accountants, lawyers who find jobs in fortune 500 companies and later become the CEOs of such companies.

Thirdly, Get something that will give you sufficient money to test your business ideas each month and to test your market. The internet allows you to test various money making ideas and learn what actually works and can make you money. Focus your off work time on certain segments of your business daily and have unwavering faith.

Wrapping Up, making money via entrepreneurship is crucial to making wealth on an exponential basis. By all means get a job as that will be part of the process, but remember wealth is obtained when your geta stake in in a business rather than remaining as a mere employee. Take action today to reach your money and freedom dreams!

By the Book Leadership

When someone tells you that a specific leader goes "by the book", what do you think about the leader? If you are like me, you generally picture a person who is consistent and predictable. As a general rule the expression "by the book" is meant as a positive compliment to the individual.

Many of us joined organizations a number of years ago and the sage advice given to us about getting ahead was:
a) Work hard;
b) Keep your nose clean;
c) Don't develop 'stick fingers';

and above all

d) Go by the book.

I am not in any way suggesting that this was bad advice for the day or even for today. However, the last piece of advice has taken on quite a different meaning in the last five to ten years.

Think about all the self-help books you have heard about or read. Perhaps they include some or all of the following:
o Stephen Covey's - Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
o Lorne C.

Plunkett & Guy A. Hale's - The Proactive Manager
o Deborah Tannen's - Talking from 9 - 5
o Jim Collins' - Good To Great
o Ken Blanchard & Sheldon Bowles' - Gung Ho!
o Ken Blanchard & Jesse Stoner's - Full Steam Ahead

The titles quoted above are all great books. These publications contain wonderful ideas from getting yourself organized; learning how men and women communicate; to getting teams organized for success. The fault often lay not in the content of the book but in the application of the concepts presented. Why, because leadership is not a "one size fits all" type of activity.

Many leaders of today hear about a great new book or theory and decide that is the concept they must embrace in their organization.

That said, somewhere along the way, generally in the next three or four months, another great book will be discovered. Suddenly a new inspiration appears and must be followed. These people still "go by the book", but the book changes again and again before any traction can be gained.

Think back over your recent past as a leader, how many different leadership books have you read? How many seemed like the panacea to your problem of sustained success? How many have you acted upon?

The solution is not to avoid these meaningful pieces of knowledge and experience but to determine your course based on your own personal vision and values. Develop a solid three to five year strategic plan and you can afford to tack to the left or right a bit over the years and yet still stay on course.

Training Tips

As a trainer, it's part of your role to get people in a receptive state for learning and to keep them engaged, interested and energised throughout the training.

There are lots of ways to do this, I won't go into all of them here. Let me just talk about energisers.

Energisers are activities which are meant to, well - energise people.

Many of the activities which are described as energisers have nothing to do with the training material. In fact, that's the point. One of the ways to energise people is to let them do something which has nothing to do with the course. It gives their minds a break.

Also, most energisers involve physical activity, getting people moving around.

This is important because sitting still for long periods leads to fatigue, simply because the blood isn't flowing and carrying oxygen round the body as well as it does when people are moving around.

So, these are two approaches to energisers - get away from the course material and get people moving.

You can use a number of activities - throwing a ball around, a treasure hunt around the room where people find hidden items, a game of charades, all kinds of team games which you can find in books or on the internet.

However, I think you need to take care with energisers.

If you're not careful, they can actually distract people and make it harder for you to get them focused back on the training.

This can happen if they take too long or if they involve a lot of running about and people get "overexcited" as my Mother used to say. In other words, they get so involved in the energiser that they take a long time to settle again.

Also, it can be tempting to rely on energisers to make up for dull training materials or methods. Energisers should not be a substitute for making your training interactive and interesting.

You can, of course, use activities as part of the training itself - use games, quizzes, group work to get people moving around and inject some fun into the learning. Keep people energised throughout rather than leaving it for specific times, such as after lunch.

If you do get the sense at some point that energy is flagging, then change what you're doing. Use variety in your approach to keep people's interest and make sure everyone is involved in the learning, avoid too much presenting or lecturing which leads to people switching off.

I always remember a good example of an energiser going wrong from a course I ran several years ago. I asked one of the participants to come up with an energiser to use after lunch on the last day.

After everyone had finished eating, he asked them all to go outside to the car park. During lunch, he'd taken a screwdriver and removed the number plates from all the participants' cars. He'd hidden them in the grounds of the hotel.

People went mad. They couldn't believe he'd taken a screwdriver to their nice shiny cars and they weren't pleased about having to search the grounds for their number plates. The activity took ages, especially since he'd forgotten where he'd put most of them.

When they had finally found their plates, it took a long time to get them focused again, in fact we had to have a break to let them calm down.

I learned a few lessons from that, I must say.

So, yes - keep people energised and watch out for fatigue setting in, but do it mainly through your training methods and don't just rely on energisers to get you through the day.

QuickBooks 'Burps'

Introduction

The extended use of QuickBooks sometimes leads to what I call 'burps'. In other words, a minor annoyance, that has to be dealt with. A few of them are simple to fix, others require computer maintenance. We are going to look at a few of these and the remedies you may need to implement.

1. "Switch or Retry" Box - Upon Opening QB File - Occassionally there will be a little dialog box opened that informs you that the server is busy and you cannot begin working in the file until this little box is gone. This box will have two buttons in it that read "Switch" or "Retry". Clicking these two buttons incessantly accomplishes nothing. Trust me, I've tried it. The Intuit Help desk has two basic theories about this error. First, it's a memory issue. QB requires 2 MB of RAM for minimal operation. I had more RAM installed on my laptop and still get this message.

But if you don't have at least 2MB, that may be the problem with your QB.

Second, it's a problem with a Help window being open at the same time as the QB send email feature being open. If this is happening on opening the file, it's possible that these two windows were open when you closed out the QB file the last time. QB automatically opens whatever windows were open when it was closed last. If the help window and the send email, (invoice, statement, etc) windows are open, you could get this message. Make sure you close out of all windows before closing QB for the day.

2. Screen 'White-Out' - This is when your entire screen 'whites out' so to speak and the QB file is frozen as that blasted hourglass spins continually. I've seen this happen only to one client, and it's frustrating because it happens at odd times. My observation on this has been that in this particular client's computer he would have as many as 30 Word documents, 30 or 40 (at one point he had 72 open) Excel documents and dozens of emails open all at the same time. He closed out of everything but QB and Outlook and didn't have that problem again. So QB is an amazing program but you need to let it have a little oxygen once in a while and close out the video games and hundreds of emails you have so it can operate.

3. Word 'white-out' - This is when your screen is viewable and everything is working ok, but when you are entering an invoice, a bill or anything using pull down menus, all the words in the chart of accounts are invisible and you must scroll down the list to find the right account as only one account is visible at a time. There is no definitive answer on the Intuit help community for this one, but just on my own observations I have noticed that this only happens when my QB file has been open for an extended period of time. I don't believe any damage comes of continuing to use the file when this happens, but unless you have memorized the accounts you are using, it's really annoying. In un-techno speak, I think it's because the QB program is getting 'tired'. When this happens, I exit the file, close all the windows and turn off the computer for about half an hour. When I return, everything is normal again.

4. Inventory Item Disappears - You've entered a new inventory item or a few of them and you start entering the invoice for a customer and realize that the item you just entered is not on the list! This happens all the time so don't feel bad, most of the time, you have entered the item as a Non-Inventory Part because you were more focused on entering the data regarding what the item is it's price, cost to customers, etc. If this isn't it you may have an issue with the backup not saving current days' work, make sure your server is secure from intrusion and that each computer is left on for nightly updates from the server. If you are not on a network, you may have a memory issue with the computer.

Conclusion

Hopefully these tips have been a help to you. It is frustrating dealing with these little 'burps' but it could be far worse, you could be using Peachtree.

Pruning and Training Plants

If you are plant loving and know much about plants and gardening then you must have come across two terms pruning and training. Pruning and training are two important process mostly used in balcony garden to fit the plants into a particular size and shape. Plants like heather and shrubby herbs are clipped occasionally to get the desired shape. Shrubs, trees and climbers are formally trained and pruned to get desired shape. Pinching top of the plants support bushy growth; lighter pruning supports more flowers and fruits and hard pruning supports vigorous growth.

Pruning Shrubs

After the flowering shrubs have bloomed, they are cut back in spring or late summer. This will make them free from dead and diseased material and is good for their growth. To avoid wind damage in winter, the stems of a pot grown rose are cut back by half after the first frost.

Pruning Climbers

Mild trimming is needed to shape the Light climbers like ivies.

Vigorous flowering climbers like jasmine and honey suckle, generally don't need any pruning, but to keep them healthy it is done to remove the dead and diseased stems. The normal Evergreen climbers are pruned in early spring while deciduous types in winter. Wisteria is pruned two times in a season, once in a mid summer and then in mid winter – cutting the side shoots by 15 cm (6 inches). Climbing rose should be cut back on the side shoots to two or three buds of the main stem. Cut back the rambling rose after first flowering completely. Clematis plants are usually grouped into different types and need variable pruning and training according to their group.

Pruning Soft Fruit Bushes

If you are willing to grow fruit bushes on a small balcony against a sunny wall or trellis, the good way is perhaps to prune a soft fruit bush into a pot grown bush or you can grow two dimensional trained effects. The new side shoots are normally pruned back to the main stem in soft fruit. For proper availability of sunlight to different parts of plants, the trees and soft fruits are grown in fan shape. Cordon and espalier needs strict pruning and training to get the horizontal forms, these forms enable them to produce maximum fruit in limited space. Some books are available in the market on gardening which describes best ways to prune and train plants and fruits.

Pruning to Achieve an Ornamental Effect

You can also provide some ornamental effects if you want with some skills and techniques. To get a topiary effect from fast growing evergreen trailers and climbers, you can train them over wire shapes. Similarly, slow growing, small-leaved evergreens like privet, yew and box, can be clipped into formal shapes. End of the summer is a good time to clip the plants.

Many shrubby or semi shrubby plants like roses, bay trees, fruit trees and fuchsias are trained into classical tall stemmed lollipop form. Different famous standards are followed in balcony containers.

eBook Copywriting Skills

E-book creation as an internet marketing product is still a quick method of making good money, even if people have leaned towards video training, coaching programs and software to achieve success online. If e-book sales become difficult, you can always give it away as a gift on squeeze pages or bundle it as a bonus with other products online. The number one question, however, is how to enhance your copywriting skills to produce e-books that sell. Let us categorize some of the basic copywriting skills in e-book creation.

1. Create a headline that attracts attention. Create an opening that makes people read further. Research has shown that majority of e-books sold are returned for refund just because the buyer could not bother to read further after a boring opening page.

2. Just do not write an e-book to fill in the pages. People prefer a book of approximately 20-50 pages with no rehashed information.

The important point to remember is that you should avoid writing an e-book that rivals the length of a novel.

3. Do not write about what others are writing. Write something different but useful that helps people solve a particular problem.

4. Research on the topic in demand. Look at affiliate sites, forums and blogs to see what people talk about and desire but the solution is not available or difficult and expensive to get.

5. Talk to your readers as a friend and mentor and not as a strict teacher disciplining the students. Unless it's a dictatorship, the last thing people want to read from you is articles in authoritative tone.

Doing a "Gut Check" - Signs You Should Consider Entrepreneurship

It's been over a decade since I first started working with entrepreneurs. Some things have changed, like the impact of social media and technology on even the smallest of businesses. Yet some things have remained the same, like the gut feelings that push many people into the scary and thrilling decision to start a business. These feelings come out in the introductions people do in many of my workshops-the time when they describe that "fed up" feeling that leads them to take on the risk of becoming an entrepreneur. For those of you who haven't had the experience of being in one of these workshops I thought I'd describe some of the more common themes here. These are the "gut feelings" that eventually lead to a new chapter in life.

It might be time to go it on your own when:

1. You have a new, better, faster or more effective way of doing your job and your boss doesn't care or tells you to stop thinking outside the clearly defined box of your job
2.

You feel your great ideas are filling someone else's pockets or you never get credit for your work
3. You wake up with a feeling of dread or symptoms of illness, but only on work days
4. You worry about work all the time and not just during occasional "crunch time" periods

There's a famous saying-"that's why they call it work"-and no one expects your job to be a source of infinite fun and games. However, your job/career/business should not feel like torture either. If you find that your "gut" is telling you that you could be doing more...it may be time to move on. You can determine if you are cut out for running your own business by taking a course, meeting with a small business counselor or perhaps just talking with entrepreneurs in your area. Small business is not always a smooth road, however for many of us it's a better road. If your talents are being wasted or abused it might be time to see if it's the road for you.
